In our Acute Care Surgery Department, we offer a comprehensive range of services to cater to various urgent surgical conditions. Our team specialises in:

  • Prompt and accurate diagnosis and management of emergency cases, including acute abdomen, and non-trauma surgical emergencies.

  • Multidisciplinary collaboration to provide timely and coordinated care for critically ill patients.

  • Advanced interventions and techniques to address life-threatening conditions, ensuring optimal patient outcomes.

  • Comprehensive evaluation and treatment of acute abdominal pain, including urgent surgical interventions when required.

  • Management of surgical infections, wound care, and other urgent surgical needs.

Academic Excellence and Research

The Acute Care Surgery team at the University of Cape Town is actively engaged in research to advance the field of urgent surgical interventions. Our research focuses on several key areas, including:

  • Registry-based outcomes and robotics in the management of hernias.

  • Outcomes of appendicitis after emergency surgery, evaluating long-term results and complications.

  • Surgical complications related to diabetes and their impact on urgent surgical care.

  • Culture of safety in laparoscopic cholecystectomy to improve patient outcomes and minimize risks.
