Gastroenterology Surgery
In the Colorectal Surgery fellowship, fellows gain exposure to a comprehensive range of colorectal practices, including the management of colorectal malignancies and inflammatory diseases of the colon. Fellows have the opportunity to perform both open and laparoscopic resections of the colon and rectum, and they are also exposed to robotic rectal surgery. Additionally, fellows gain extensive experience in diagnostic and interventional colonoscopy, including endoscopic resections.

Surgical Gastroenterology Fellowship at the University of Cape Town
The Surgical Gastroenterology Fellowship at the University of Cape Town offers a comprehensive two-year program in Colorectal, Upper Gastrointestinal, or Hepatobiliary Surgery. This fellowship is registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), allowing fellows to gain recognition as subspecialists upon completion of clinical training and passing the exit examination hosted by the College of Medicine. In addition, fellows are registered with the University of Cape Town for an MPhil degree, which includes a minor dissertation component.

Colorectal Surgery
Hepatobiliary Surgery (HPB)
In addition to clinical training, fellows may have the option to engage in research projects and academic activities related to trauma surgery. This academic component offers an opportunity to contribute to the advancement of knowledge and innovation in trauma care while enhancing the fellows' understanding of trauma management through evidence-based practices.
Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgery
In the Upper GI fellowship, fellows receive extensive exposure to upper gastrointestinal pathology and procedures. Fellows are involved in diagnostic upper endoscopy, interventional endoscopy (including complex dilatations, endoscopic resections, treatment of Barrett's esophagus, and luminal stenting), and motility studies of the esophagus. Surgical procedures include open and laparoscopic benign and oncological procedures of the foregut.
